COVID-19 has increased demand for E-Commerce all over the world. While we are no strangers to Online Shopping, the pandemic has accelerated the shift towards a more digital world and triggered changes in online shopping behaviors that are likely to have lasting effects.
According to studies, COVID-19 indeed shifted consumer behavior into buying online, but even with the high demand for online shopping it didn’t mean people are spending more. In fact, online purchases rose, but consumer spending fell.
The reason behind? The rise of E-commerce giants such as Lazada and Shopee – where we can literally get everything we can possibly think of! Here’s several reasons as to how they did it.
They spend a lot on advertising. Without noticing it, big players like Lazada and Shopee have managed to infiltrate our lives naturally. When I say they spend a lot on advertising I mean LOTS! So much that it regularly appears in our social media newsfeed and stories. We even know their jingles! #LSS
The fear of human contact so consumers stayed away from brick and mortar stores. Retailers and merchants have no choice but to find a way to and continue selling. Online shopping and delivery played a crucial role in the survival of the business. They tried free marketplaces like Carousel, OLX, Facebook Marketplace, however, it’s way too overcrowded and it’s difficult to cut through the noise.
Rise of e-wallets. Apps can store coins and in-app credits for refunds, facilitating purchase, and so on. This in return made the consumers reliant on spending that $$ on the app itself.
This is an advancement that has taken a toll on individuals who have relied on short term E-commerce stores, no brand, no credibility, no quality assurance and pricier items. Now this has worked pretty well for some before, but today? There’s a big chance consumers will take interest in your products but will end up buying it from trusted E-commerce instead, such as Shopee & Lazada.
The past year has greatly changed the course of the digital world and the changes are here to stay.
